Acne scars are caused by the body's inflammatory response to sebum, bacteria and dead cells in the plugged sebaceous follicle. A number of different types of acne scars exist but they are generally divided into two categories; (i) scars caused by increased tissue formation called keloids or hypertrophic scars and (ii) scars caused by loss of tissue such as icepick scars and boxcar scars.
